Either Your Browser or a Browser Add-In Is Preventing NetDocuments From Opening Dialog Windows

If you’ve seen this message in NetDocuments, you’re not alone. It appears when NetDocuments tries to open a dialog window — such as when previewing an attachment sent through the system — and something in your browser blocks it.

The good news: you can usually work around it immediately by clicking Open instead of the option that triggers the dialog. But that’s a workaround, not a fix.

What causes this?

NetDocuments relies on browser pop-up windows for certain actions, including viewing internally shared attachments and some document-related dialogs. When a browser or browser extension blocks those pop-ups, NetDocuments throws this error rather than silently failing.

Common culprits include:

  • Pop-up blockers — built into Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari by default
  • Ad blocker extensions — uBlock Origin, AdBlock Plus, and similar tools often block pop-up windows as a side effect
  • Privacy-focused extensions — Privacy Badger, Ghostery, and others can interfere
  • Browser security policies — some IT-managed browsers have hardened pop-up settings that override user preferences

How to fix it

The most reliable solution is to allow pop-ups from your NetDocuments domain in your browser settings. Use the URL for your data center:

  • US: https://vault.netvoyage.com/
  • Canada: https://can.netdocuments.com/

In Chrome: Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Pop-ups and redirects, then add your NetDocuments URL to the allowed list.

In Edge: Go to Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Pop-ups and redirects, and allow your NetDocuments URL.

In Firefox: When the pop-up is blocked, you’ll see a notification in the address bar — click it and choose to allow pop-ups from the site.

If pop-ups are already allowed and you’re still seeing the error, the next step is to disable extensions one at a time to identify which one is interfering. Start with any ad blocker or privacy extension.

If you’re on a managed device where IT controls browser settings, you may need to contact your IT department to whitelist the appropriate NetDocuments URL at the policy level.
