If your firm uses WordPerfect, you already know there’s no native NetDocuments integration for it. Estate planning firms in particular are still running WordPerfect every day, and for good reason — it does what they need. But when those firms move to NetDocuments, one thing they often miss from their old system is the automatic document ID stamp in the footer.
In Worldox, that stamp happened automatically. In NetDocuments, it’s a different story.
One Step Save Bridges the Gap
The good news is that Robert Gray and his team built One Step Save, a product that hooks WordPerfect into NetDocuments — giving you a native-feeling save dialog right inside WordPerfect. It’s a great solution for firms that aren’t ready to leave WordPerfect behind.
However, if you go into ndOffice and look at the ID stamp settings, you’ll notice it says MS Word only. So out of the box, One Step Save doesn’t stamp the NetDocuments document ID into the footer of your WordPerfect files.
The Key Discovery
Here’s where it gets interesting. When you save a WordPerfect document through One Step Save, look up at the title bar. The filename NetDocuments assigns includes the document ID right in the name — something like:
Contract 4897-9805-1501 v.1.wpd
That document ID is sitting right there in the filename. And WordPerfect already knows how to put the filename into a footer.
How to Set It Up
WordPerfect has a native field code that inserts the current document’s filename into a header or footer and keeps it updated automatically. Here’s how to add it:
- With your document open, go to Insert → Header/Footer → Footer A → Create
- Once your cursor is inside the footer, go to Insert → Other → Filename
- Save the document
That’s it. The footer will now display the filename — including the NetDocuments document ID — and it will update automatically each time the file is saved through One Step Save.
A Note for WordPerfect Power Users
If you’re a WordPerfect veteran who lives in Reveal Codes, you probably already know a dozen ways to set up an auto-updating footer. The specific menu path above works in WordPerfect 2021, but the underlying field code is the same across versions — you’re just inserting a filename field into the footer, which WordPerfect has supported for years.
The Result
Every WordPerfect document saved through One Step Save will carry the NetDocuments document ID in its footer — automatically, with no macros, no scripting, and no third-party tools beyond what you’re already using.
